A grain whisky that’s just a pot still away from being a single malt.
A grain whisky made only from malt? That’s also smoky? Paradoxical spirits are something of a calling card for the whiskymakers at Loch Lomond Distillery who operate their site with seriously open minds. The team at Compass Box managed to source some of their peated, Coffey-distilled whisky to create the latest Compass Box Experimental Grain offering.
They say it’s just a pot still away from being a single malt because despite this being 100% malted barley, the use of a column rather than a pot still during distillation means this cannot be classified as a single malt – it is the perfect spirit around which to build a unique blended grain Scotch whisky.
Compass Box Experimental Grain Tasting Notes:
Age: NAS
Proof: 92
Color: Light honey
Nose: I definitely got the full malty grain aromas here. Like crushing up frosted flakes and snorting the powder. Kids, please don’t try that at home.
Palate: If you could throw a bowl of those frosted flakes in a smoker with some peat moss and pinecones for a few minutes… you’d probably end up with something very similar to what you’ll taste here.
Finish: A bit on the longer side. The smokiness fades into a sweet, yet piney, flavored oil slick that lingers.
